Scratch Cookery
Welcome to **Scratch Cookery**, San Jose’s latest gem for chicken lovers! Nestled at 30 Fountain Alley #150, this chicken shop specializes in creating mouthwatering, made-to-order dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. Known for their signature buttermilk-brined chicken, Scratch Cookery has quickly made a name for itself in the bustling food scene of downtown San Jose.
Upon entering, you're greeted with the aromas of crispy chicken and spices. The menu features an array of options, from juicy chicken tenders served hot or classic, to crispy nuggets that are perfect for sharing (if you can bring yourself to!). You can choose your spice level for the tenders, starting from a mild 0 to a fiery Level 5 that promises to get your heart racing.
- Chicken Tenders: Indulge in 2, 3, or 4 pieces of beautifully brined chicken, complemented by a side of pickles, comeback sauce, and fries for just $16.
- Wings and Nuggets: Enjoy crispy chunks of white meat fried chicken, also available with a choice of dry spice or classic. This dish, priced at $16, comes with fries and a generous side of comeback sauce.
- Drinks: Quench your thirst with bottled water or a refreshing can of soda, available for $3.00 and $2.50 respectively.
Reviewers rave about the explosion of flavors in each bite. Customer Eddy G found the chicken sandwiches to be worth the wait, highlighting the option to balance the heat with honey. His only setback was the fries, which he deemed “bland and unremarkable.”
However, other patrons like Joanne Sugiyama and Adrienne Cherie Ricker couldn’t get enough of the perfectly seasoned, crispy chicken paired with distinctive fries, described as thick and fluffy yet crispy. Adrienne echoed the sentiment that the food is made fresh to order, making Scratch Cookery a haven for those who appreciate quality.
While the interior is minimalistic and seating may be limited, with a handful of bar stools lining the room, the buzz of energy and the openness of the kitchen create an inviting atmosphere. Friends and families often opt for outdoor seating, adding a fun casual vibe to the experience.
In terms of affordability, some customers note that while it's not the cheapest option in town—two meals with drinks can run around $60—it’s the quality of the food that makes it worth every penny. As Angie Anderson eloquently states, Scratch Cookery may just be her favorite among Nashville-style chicken establishments.
Whether you’re craving a quick lunch or a late-night snack, Scratch Cookery is sure to have something to satisfy your hunger. Prepare to indulge in a delicious, spicy adventure that keeps you coming back for more!

We went to Scratch Cookery late on a Friday, and it was pretty packed. The line to order was a bit of a mess, but the food looked worth it. After getting a couple chicken sandwiches, I can confirm that the food was worth it. I went pretty conservative on the spice level (0 for one sandwich, and 1 for the other). I’d probably bump it up next time. A nice addition to the spicy sandwiches is the ability to use the packets of provided honey to make the sandwiches a sweet and savory combo. It was pretty nice. My one complaint is the fries. They were pretty bland and unremarkable.

We tried their food truck last weekend at an event and found out they have a storefront in DTSJ. I can't tell you how happy my husband and I were.....so happy that we thought about the chicken all week and visited their location tonight! And we were so excited and hungry that we forgot to snap a photo......maybe next time! The chicken is juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and perfectly seasoned! I get Level 1 and my hubs gets Level 4, maybe next time Level 5. The fries are this interesting shape that is curved but not like a curly fry because they're thicker. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside - perfection! And the cowboy sauce is addicting! We will DEFINITELY be back! Edited 2/22/25: We came back and it was just as good as I had remembered. Added photos this time!

The food is made fresh to order and cooked perfectly. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. You have options for different spice levels. The servings are very large. I got chicken tenders because I wasn’t very hungry and wanted something light. Each tender was like an entire breast. Took it home and freshened it up in the air fryer for a late evening snack. The inside is sparse with only a handful of bar stools to sit on the sides of the room. I think you’re expected to sit outside. I think there may have been patio heaters but if there were they weren’t operating. The room is open to the kitchen so you can see it is a very clean and well kept space. There’s not much service beyond ordering. It’s not the cheapest option. Two meals, one beer and one soda ran us about 60 after tax.

Huge chicken sandos with a real kick for people who like actually spicy food! The Nashville chicken sandwich at level 5 spiciness was slightly spicier than a 'regular' spicy Chinese dish. The fries are a very interesting shape and were perfectly hot and crispy on the outside/soft on the inside.
